PHP-MySQL Web Application Developer
Jannie van Tonder (trading as Makouvlei.net)
I have been professionally involved in web development since 1996, the early days of the Internet boom. During this time I have developed a number of successful web applications, as well as managed a large web development team, seeing major corporate projects through from consultation to launch.
My experience in dealing with all aspects of a range of projects from small business sites and typical e-commerce-enabled product catalogue sites, to large corporate developments, has given me excellent insight into clients' needs, and how to deliver a quality product on time that does the job without quirks!
After 15 years as a successful professional in the music industry, I got involved in Internet development in 1996 joining a prominent Cape Town ISP as a database programmer on their web development team. In time, I assumed executive responsibility for the 14-member team, overseeing all processes including consultation, design, programming, integration, testing & launch.
I have freelanced since 2001, focusing on PHP/MySQL development, outsourcing graphic design work to experienced professionals as and when required. I have developed many complete e-commerce applications, several of which I still maintain, including some that have been up & running for up to 18 years.
Since 2010 a large part of my work has been as OJS developer, responsible for all development and maintenance at AJOL (African Journlas Online), the world's largest online collection of African-published, peer-reviewed scholarly journals. OJS is an open-source journal management and publishing system developed by the Public Knowledge Project based in Vancouver, Canada. I have successfully upgraded over 500 journals from OJS2 to OJS3.
